Costco AU

Who would have thought that a Costco could look like this?

It's the Costco at Waterfront City in Melbourne's Docklands, designed by NHArchitecture and completed in 2009. The architects describe it as such:
[It] demonstrates how large format retailing need not conform to the traditional stereotype of a big pitched-roof shed. The project challenges this precept by combining Costco’s globally successful retail strategy with VicUrban’s design agenda promoting quality contemporary architecture and public space.

Big box retailing does not have a good track record for promoting leading architecture and urban design. Traditionally banished to the industrial edges of the city and symbolised by a massive shed in a sea of asphalt, the reputation is often well deserved. Melbourne’s new headquarters for Costco overcomes this conventional attitude.

Alloy on John Street

Last week Mayor Bloomberg "Announce[d] Approval of Development That Will Allow for Expansion and Funding of Brooklyn Bridge Park." Specifically this headline is referring to a 47-unit, 100,000-sf development at 1 John Street in DUMBO. The development team is comprised of Alloy Development and Monadnock Construction, though the press release linked above does not indicate the architect responsible for the design.

A hint at who is responsible for the building design can be found in Alloy Development, which has Jared Della Valle (formerly of Della Valle Bernheimer Architecture) as its President. DVB undertook projects as both architect and developer, a situation that seems to have precipitated the split into Alloy and Bernheimer Architecture—the former focused on development and the latter on architecture. So is 1 John Street's boxy and glassy design the product of Alloy Development itself? I'd wager it is (a sentiment echoed by Crains).

Alloy certainly isn't alone in developing and designing substantial residential developments. DDG comes to mind as one developer/architect making its stamp on New York City, with projects in NoHo and the Meatpacking District in particular. Naturally, with Alloy's location in Brooklyn they are focusing on developments in that borough; one standout is the nearby Dumbo Townhouses.

It's worth comparing Alloy's design for 1 John Street with the other 10 developer entries in the Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation's RFP for the site, which can be seen at Curbed. Alloy's winning entry is Team 11. In addition to the 47 residential units, the proposal includes ground floor retail and a branch of the Brooklyn Children's Museum.

Business Enablement through Release Management

Ever since IT became self-aware (no, not like Skynet in the Terminator) it has been striving to make itself more and more efficient.  The “Aha!” moment for every IT organization comes when it realizes that business thinks it is too slow and delivers little value.  After much introspection, new promises are made, commitment to customer service is renewed, processes are modified and streamlined, resources are trained, and so on…  Everything runs great for awhile only to be repeated a couple of years later.

In the recent years, when the technology became more business user friendly, IT organizations realized that the best thing they could do for the business was to let it have a piece of the action.  “Business Enablement” became the thing to do.  The idea was to let the business users actually make changes to some parts of the IT systems.  According to James Taylor, a thought leader in the decision management space, “business enablement means putting the business users, those who understand the business and how it needs to change, in a position to make the changes they want and need without IT being a roadblock."(http://www.ebizq.net/blogs/decision_management/2006/08/heres_a_quick_way_to_deliver_b.php)

Many organizations have struggled with enabling its business users in the way James Taylor describes it.  Many have tried, yet many have failed.  Those that are successful not only introduce the right technology solutions but also modify many of its processes to ensure that business users can actually do what they need with little or no IT involvement.  Simplification and streamlining of the processes, automation, and modernization are the keys to a successful business enablement initiative.  Introducing the right business enablement technology is, of course, beside the point.

Typically, the biggest obstacle to making business enablement work well is the IT Release Management process.  It is often too rigid and cumbersome, requires a small army to execute, and takes a long time.  Business doesn't want to wait months for its often simple changes to be moved to production.  This is not what business enablement is all about.  Yet, IT, rightly so, doesn't want to let anything get into production without proper testing and validation.  And here, at these crossroads is where most business enablement initiatives die.

But there is a way to solve this…  The simple solution is to provide a shortcut to production for most if not all the changes made by the business.  The diagram below depicts a high level process for achieving this.


It really doesn’t matter what tools are employed or what types of changes are made.  This process should be able to handle most situations.  The idea here is simple.  To streamline the movement of business artifacts from development to production, several steps need to be taken.
  1. Establish a Business Development Environment, a location where business users can make changes to elements of IT systems under their control and test the impacts of these changes 
  2. Once the changes are ready, provide an automated way to execute as many regression tests as necessary to validate that the changes do not impact any existing systems 
  3. Enable an automated way to execute performance / load tests to ensure that changes do not adversely impact established NFRs 
  4. Ensure stakeholders validate that the changes do not break current systems’ functionality 
  5. Upon successful completion of all the tests, provide an automated way to deploy changes to production
Ideally, this process should take a few hours, a couple of days at the most.  It should shortcut the existing Release Management process that normally takes weeks to complete.  The goal is to introduce changes into production as quickly as possible.  Of course, not every change is eligible for such first class treatment.  The basic guiding principles for a shortened release management lifecycle should be:

  • If a change is confined to business owned elements only and no changes by IT are needed, the change is eligible for the streamlined release 
  • If any IT changes are required, the regular release management process should be followed

While this process is simple from a high level perspective, there is a lot of hard work that needs to go into it to make it operational.  Automation of testing and release management functions is never simple, fast, or straightforward.  It usually takes months or even years to reach a point where it will cover 80% of IT systems and business functions.  Yet, without automation, the process as described above cannot work.  There is not going to be anything fast or streamlined about manual testing of business changes.  On the other hand, the culture change required to make this process work can be daunting.  Not many IT organizations will be willing to make this kind of a leap.

Business enablement can be achieved without a streamlined release management process.  However, business agility cannot.  Businesses cannot move as quickly as they can and react rapidly to a changing business climate without a way to introduce changes to IT systems in days rather than months.  Those that can leverage business enablement and release management processes to their advantage will inevitably come out ahead.

Living in Zurich

For the last week and a half I was in Zurich, Switzerland, for World-Architects, checking out some new architecture in the evenings after work. Many of the buildings I happened to look at were recent housing projects, primarily middle-class developments just west of central Zurich. Tonight: Zaha Hadid on BBC One's imagine...

Zaha Hadid is the subject of Alan Yentob's interest tonight as part of  BBC One's imagine... series. The programme 'Zaha Hadid: Who Dares Wins' will profile the work of one of the most internationally famous contemporary architects working today, and winner of the Pritzker Architecture Award (the highest possible accolade in the architecture profession) in 2004.


Born in 1950 in Baghdad and based in London, Zaha Hadid's dynamic and often unexpected architectural forms exist at the interface between the natural landscape and human-made systems. Hadid experiments with the latest technologies to produce unexpected architectural forms which are simultaneously fluid and complex in style. She is founder and director of Zaha Hadid Architects which for the past 30 years has revolutionised architectural design through a number of successful global projects. The firm's success secures Hadid's status as the most successful female architect to have lived.



In tonight's programme, the ever-affable Alan Yentob attempts to understand the woman behind such architectural vision: how has Hadid managed to actualise her highly experimental style, bringing her visionary ideas - at one time considered impossible - to exist as some of the world's most exactingly-designed and seminal buildings. The programme profiles many of Hadid's famous designs. We are hoping for an insight into the Galaxy Soho in Beijing, the Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art in Cincinnati and possibly the design of Glasgow's Riverside Museum.

The Eiffel Tower on the Google Cultural Institute

The latest offering from the wonderful innovators at the Google Cultural Institute has a certain "je ne sais quoi." Paris' most visited monument, The Eiffel Tower has been given the digitial treatment in an exciting new project which, (attention all architects!) educates on the monument's masterful construction.

Three online exhibits blend the Towers's history with an excellent collection of items including rare archival images, photographs from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century and even reproductions of the original architect's plans by Gustave Eiffel.


The first exhibit explores the birth of the Eiffel Tower while the second provides step-by-step details of the construction of the monument through a showcase of itemised photographs and sketches. A look at the Tower's inauguration and first few visitors lies in the third exhibit. Its social impact was immediately manifest by the visitors' willingness to climb 1710 steps to reach the top! The Google Street View Team have filmed 360-degree views of the monument's architecture and provide the panoramic views seen over Paris on making the ascent.



Constructed in 1889, the Eiffel Tower was built as a tribute on the 100 year anniversary of the French Revolution. In the same year, Paris held its Exposition Universelle, an exhibition for participating nations to showcase the advancements made in a heavily industrial age. The Tower's construction in two years, two months and five days is still hailed as an architectural achievement and an astonishing feat of French engineering. It remained the highest structure of its kind in the world for 40 years (a tile held today by the Burj Kalifa in Dubai) and continues to attract over 7 million visitors a year. As well as being France's most iconic symbol, this also makes it one of the world's most visited monuments!


We blogged about the marvellous Google Cultural Institute on the GSA Library Art & Design blog when it launched back in October last year. The virtual museum is amassing worldwide acclaim as it gathers momentum with the collections of some prestigious galleries and museums freely accessible to all. This latest project is tremendously exciting for bringing to life the architectural vision of Gustave Eiffel in the late nineteenth century and for the resources capabilities as a valuable educational resource! Vive la Google!
